Simple version: personal, non-commercial use is free. If Aarau is being used for a business, client, employer, monetised product, commercial website, app or other money-making purpose, you need the appropriate paid licence.
PERSONAL USE
One individual may install and use Aarau for free in personal, non-commercial work. This includes school work, private experiments, testing, non-commercial artwork and personal portfolio pieces showing your own work.
The free personal licence does not cover work for a business, employer, paying client, monetised project, advertising campaign, product for sale or any other commercial purpose.
COMMERCIAL LICENCES
Commercial use is allowed once the correct licence has been purchased. Standard pricing is listed below in Australian dollars.
One user. Client work, logos, identity, advertising, social, print, packaging, presentations and other static commercial output.
Up to five users within one business or studio. Static commercial output. Web and app embedding are separate.
One domain. Allows Aarau webfont files to be embedded and served on that licensed website.
One app or software product. Final pricing can vary with distribution, scale and platforms.
For more than five users, multiple domains or products, OEM use, server use or larger distribution.
Custom licensing can be arranged for uses that do not fit neatly into the standard categories.
WHAT THE LICENCE ALLOWS
An Individual Commercial or Small Team licence lets the licensed users create final static commercial artwork using Aarau. That can include logos, brand assets, advertising, social media, packaging, print, presentations and client deliverables.
If a client needs to install or directly use the font files themselves, the client needs its own appropriate licence. Webfont embedding requires a Web Licence. App or software embedding requires an App / Software Licence.
You may convert Aarau text into outlines or static artwork for uses allowed by your licence.
Font files may not be redistributed
You may not sell, give away, publicly host, sublicense or redistribute the Aarau font files unless Benjamin Miles has specifically agreed to that use in writing. You also may not make Aarau available to unlicensed users or claim authorship of the typeface.
Private cloud and team tools
You may upload Aarau to a private design or collaboration service only when access is limited to users covered by the licence and the service does not make the font publicly downloadable.
AARAU 0.1 LEGACY COPIES
Aarau 0.1 was previously distributed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Copies that were already distributed under that licence keep the rights granted by it. Those earlier rights are not revoked.
Aarau 0.2 and later are distributed under the Aarau Font Licence Agreement instead. This cleanly separates the earlier open-source release from the new personal-free / commercial-paid release.
FULL TERMS
The authoritative terms for Aarau 0.2 and later are in LICENSE.txt. The file covers definitions, ownership, personal use, commercial licence categories, client work, embedding, restrictions, modifications, termination, warranty and governing law.
